INDIA'S CONSTITUTION AND ITS CHALLENGES
THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION
The Indian Constitution came into effect on 26th of January 1950. Before the was made our country's situation was very tumultuous. INDIA became free on 15th of August 1947 but was divided. Hence there was an urgent need for a NON-BIASED CONSTITUTION. Thousands of refugees were forced to leave their homes and shift to other places. Many people died before they reach their destination.
CHALLENGES TO THE CONSTITUTION
The first and foremost challenge was to shape a nation that was united irrespective of the diversity that existed in the society. Although millions of people were forced to migrate to Pakistan, India has always been full of "CULTURAL DIVERSITY". It was really important to frame a CONSTITUTION which could cater to the interests of all the people and do not stress on the development of one religion. The second challenge was to establish "DEMOCRACY. This term was not very familiar with our country. So making people understand the importance of DEMOCRACY was a real challenge. Third challenge was to ensure the development and well-being of the entire society and not only of some sections. Being a democratic it was really important to frame a NON-BIASED CONSTITUTION (as i said earlier). Although there was a majority of Hindus and Muslims, the other communities should never feel left-out and should have equal rights over the resources our country has. Another difficult challenge faced during the time of framing the constitution was illiteracy that prevailed in the society. Not all the INDIANS during that time were educated and they had some superstitious beliefs. They were not ready to accept that every religion should be treated equally and to make them understand the politicians and the social welfare activists had to teach them. For that they opened schools and educational institutions all over the country. They even influenced the youth of that time to get education. This seems very easy nowdays but at that time changing someone's perception was a very tough task.Integration of the princely states was another challenge which was faced by the INDIAN CONSTITUTION makers. There were two provinces in BRITISH INDIA-The British Indian Provinces which under control of the British Government and the Princely States which were under the Indian Princes. After INDEPENDENCE there were 565 Princely States. Many of these states joined the INDIAN UNION but some of them refused and these states were Travancore , Hyderabad, Kashmir and Manipur. This was a real trouble for the Government. The Government took steps to solve this problem. The Princely States were given the freedom to either join INDIA or PAKISTAN. These Princely states were selfish and only thought about their own gains. Hence to make them understand was adverse. The relations between center and state was a challenge for the CONSTITUTION. During the post independence times the relations between the Center and State was not very cordial, or maybe we can take it in the way that the making of the constitution was new so to establish good relations was tough. Some political leaders disagreed while planning about certain things hence the relations were not very warm and pleasant.
7) While doing something new we need "Confidence". While the framers of the Constitution were always demotivated. Making a Constitution for a "Diverse Country like INDIA" was something every country was looking at. All the eyes were on us at that time. Hence this was again a challenge for the makers of the Constitution to look after all the things very carefully and look after the interests of all the people rather than looking after the majority groups. It was a responsibility to remove the feeling of being left-out amongst the minority groups.
SUMMING UP
Lastly I would like to conclude by saying that even with thousands of challenges, Our Political Leaders made a CONSTITUTION containing 395 Articles and 8 Schedule. It contained 145,000 words. Our CONSTITUTION is the longest in the world. With all the obstacles Our Country proved that "WE CAN DO IT IF WE DESIRE IT". While writing about the Constitution I personally feel a sense of Pride. This is the first time I'm writing a blog so Pardon Me if anything was not appropriate. In the end I would just say that we live in a culturally diverse country and we should respect each other and stay togther united.
